What Makes Anthony a Great Dad

It;s Father’s Day and I thought it’s only right for me to write something for the father of my children and let him know what an amazing dad he is and how grateful we are to have him as head of our family.

What makes Anthony a great dad is, first and foremost, his being there for our two adorable boys ever since they were small. I remember the look on his face the first time he gazed at our newborn Luis, how he always stayed awake to watch him and catch him smile in his sleep.

He himself grew up in a farm, and he's easily shared his love for the outdoors to our firstborn Luis, who spent much of his childhood around animals and cowboys.

I will also never forget how he was there with me when I gave birth to our second son. Before driving me to the hospital, he cooked spaghetti at five o’ clock in the morning while I was in the shower and he held my hand the whole time inside the delivery room.

He barely left my side when we were waiting for our second son to be born.

He may not realize what it means to children to receive attention from their parents and how kids spell love T-I-M-E, but he’s always loved driving them around and cuddling them before bedtime.

Teaching Luis how to shoot. This kid learned basic gun safety, learned how to clean his .22 rifle, and fired his first shot at age six. He enjoyed shooting targets as much as Anthony enjoyed teaching him.

Fortunately for me, it's customary in their family that fathers -- not mothers -- care for sons when they get circumcised. He held Luis' hand in his all the while, enduring that queasy feeling he had in his gut until the doctor was done.

...and because Luis wouldn't leave the room, he made sure the boy never felt alone and lonely.

His being a father only got better through the years. He's always accompanied me to regular trips to the doctor after Jun Edward, our second son, was born. By the way, it was he who named our younger baby, after both our fathers.

Heavy equipment always fascinated our boys. He took this opportunity to request the operator to allow our adventurous champion to sit next to him in the cabin while he worked. It was one of the most magical ten minutes of the boy's life.

Getting Jun Edward ready for school.
Getting Jun Edward ready for school. I can’t get the kids moving early in the morning like he can.

He’s been a very hands-on dad lately and to some it might look effortless. Not that taking care of and spending time with the kids is a burden to him, but those who have known him for a long time know how much he has sacrificed and how much of his old self he’s given up just to become a better dad.

And I know in my heart he’s just started! I see many more years of making beautiful memories as we grow together as a family and along with our boys.

To the sweetest, most thoughtful and reliable dad, our super hero, the one we can always count on, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY to you. You are indeed a living proof that God works in each and every family who calls on Him and believes in Him. To God be all the glory.
