Adolescents love hanging out with their peers and what better place to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon at than one where they can be with people their age, have fun and just be themselves!
The Local Government Unit of Maramag, headed by their dedicated and results-oriented town mayor, Hon. Jose V. Obedencio, saw the need for a safe haven for the youth — both in-school and out-of-school — where they can run to for help whenever they’re in crisis and can’t talk to an adult, obtain needed information about themselves and the major physical and emotional changes they go through, or simply spend their leisure time with friends their age. The people of Maramag call this place “Tambayan ng Kabataan sa Maramag.”
THE FACILITY’S VISION AND MISSION
Develop a breed of Maramagnons who are well-informed, empowered, responsible and healthy, equipped to become the upcoming leaders of the society
Ensure that all adolescents and youth have access to quality and comprehensive health care services in an adolescent and youth friendly environment
As its name suggests, it truly is one perfect place to make tambay or hangout with your friends. There’s plenty of activities to choose from, teenagers will never have dull moments in this place. I had the opportunity to personally visit the place a few days ago and everything in there simply flooded me with nostalgic memories from my youth.
Fun and Worthwhile Activities to Pass the Time
There are books for the bookworms, mostly donated by people with big hearts for young people, and they have Nancy Drew! I don’t mean to sound biased, but personally, I wish more and more Filipino girls still knew Nancy Drew instead of these showbiz love teams they see on TV nowadays.
The also musical instruments for those who are musically inclined, board games like chess, Monopoly (don’t you just miss playing monopoly?), and our old Filipino favorite — sungka. Young people can also watch educational videos or read magazines with age-appropriate content.
Venue for Youth Meetings and Gatherings
Not that it’s a very big place, but it’s big enough to hold meetings and conferences for small groups. Teenagers can use the facility’s smart TV to view films or for presentations.
Health and Psycho-social Services
The facility is open to the youth from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sometimes, different government agencies hold capability building activities here, but everyday they welcome adolescents who might be in need of counseling, medical consultation or simply want to hangout with young people their age.

CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS
Young professionals as well as the young-at-hearts who have the passion for children and the youth are welcome to share their time, talent and resources for the improvement of the teen center. Doc “Z” Perocho of the Rural Health Unit of Maramag is among the adult professionals who supervise the place. The center opened its door to the public in September this year and for now it has sufficient materials and equipment to serve the number of youth who come to visit. Eventually though, as more and more people come to know the place, ample space would be needed to provide the youth better services. But Doc “Z” seems pretty positive and optimistic about it.
So the next time you think about going someplace to unwind or relax, why not drop by the Tambayan ng Kabataan and share your time with young people. Sharing our time is perhaps the most precious thing we can do for the youth.
